Arrangement

Items in the collection are arranged by family member and type of material, then chronologically.

Scope and Contents

The Coe-Brown Family Papers consists primarily of the sermons and personal papers of Rev. Jonas Coe, including papers concerning his ministerial studies and career, legal and financial documents. The collection also contains the letters and schoolwork of Coe's grandson, Jonas M. Coe. The schoolwork represents his studies at the Orange County Institute in Newburgh, NY, between 1825-1839. Correspondence discusses his studies and daily life and is mainly written to friends and to his aunt, Eliza Brown.

Also included in the collection is a journal of a missionary tour written by Rev. Coe's son John Robert Coe, an account book belonging to daughter Eliza Coe Brown, and letters from other members of the Coe-Brown family.

The final folder in the collection contains the papers of Rev. Coe's grandson John Crosby Brown, consisting mainly of correspondence between Brown and James P. Wallace and B. H. Hall. This correspondence is primarily related to the history and recovery of the papers and sermons of Rev. Jonas Coe, and Crosby's creation of a book of reminiscences of his grandfather for the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, NY to be read at its Centennial service in 1892.
