Abstract

Martin Tucker is an author, editor, and Professor Emeritus of English at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Tucker earned a B.A. from Washington Square College (NYU) in 1949, an M.A. at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and a PhD in English literature from NYU in 1963. He spent time in the Taos arts community in the 1953. He later worked as an editorial assistant for Lyn Riggs and as a reporter for Associated Press and other outlets. He taught English at Long Island University until retiring in 1996. Tucker also served on the Executive Board of PEN American Center, and co-founded and served as the Editor-in-Chief of CONFRONTATION Magazine. The Martin Tucker Papers (dated 1948-2008) consists of materials created and collected by Tucker documenting his career as an author and editor. Materials include correspondence and ephemera, including letters from fellow New York University classmates Alfred Chester, D.H. Melhem, Cynthia Ozick, and Sol Yurick. The collection also includes letters from Frieda Lawrence, the widow of D.H. Lawrence. Ephemera includes the front cover of the January 1948 issue of The Apprentice, the literary magazine of Washington Square College; a program for a performance by Tucker and Mary Leonard; and the monograph Poets and Artists: Collaborations and Combinations, in which Tucker's work was included. The collection also includes documents from Tucker's service on the PEN American Center Executive Board, and correspondence and a newspaper regarding New York University alumni.
