Abstract

Voices in Contemporary Art (VoCA) is a non-profit organization devoted to "critical dialogue and interdisciplinary programming to address the production, presentation, and preservation of contemporary art." VoCA's primary programs include workshops, the VoCA Talks series, and VoCA Journal. The Voices in Contemporary Art Records (dated 2013-2021) consist of electronic documents and recordings from the organization's administrative activities, publications, and VoCA Talks series of artists discussing various aspects related to the creation, showing, and preservation of contemporary art. Materials in this collection include general information on VoCA as an organization, templates for authors and other contributors, style guides, and materials regarding publication and promotion of the organization's journal, including article drafts, images used in the publication, email announcements, launch event flyers, and marketing in other publications. The collection also includes pdfs, jpegs, and mov files documenting each event in the Talks series, including photographs, promotional materials, transcripts of remarks, video recordings, and administrative documents. Not every artist who has participated in the VoCA Talks series is represented in this collection. Event speakers documented in this collection include Henrietta Mantooth, Mimi Smith, Arlan Huang, Jaime Davidovich, Otto Neals, Blane De St.Croix, Juan Sanchez, Christy Rupp, Sarah Oppenheimer, De Wain Valentine, Leonardo Drew, Sonia Almeida, Derrick Adams, Lorraine O'Grady, Tara Sabharwal, Emmett Wigglesworth, Marcos Dimas, Ted Kurahara, Marie Watt, Tory Fair, Gwen Fabricant, Mario Martinez, and Vito Acconci.

Processing Information

New York University Libraries follow professional standards and best practices when imaging, ingesting, and processing born-digital material in order to maintain the integrity and authenticity of the content. One hard drive was forensically imaged, analyzed, and arranged in Forensic Toolkit, maintaining the donor's original arrangement structure. Empty file directories (i.e., folders with no files) were not retained. An accretion with materials documenting the organization's administrative activities and scholarly publication was integrated into the existing collection as separate intellectual series due to their distinct nature.
