Biographical Note
Andrew Fiske (February 21, 1909 - August 31, 1992) was born in Cambridge, MA to Augustus Henry Fiske and Esther Bennett. Andrew was a thirteenth generation descendant of Nathaniel Sylvester and inherited Shelter Island upon the passing of his father in 1949. Andrew was a Harvard College and Business School graduate, and managed the Groton, CT Electric Boat Company during World War II. Fiske was the Long Island representative for Boston brokerage firm H.C. Wainwright, and was a founder, trustee and president of the Suffolk County Library. Fiske served for more than forty years on the Shelter Island Public Library board, and served for more than twenty years on the Shelter Island school board, the Eastern Long Island Hospital board, and with the Suffolk County Historical Society.
Alice Hench Fiske (November 9, 1917 - April 17, 2006) was born in Youngstown, OH to Laverne Willis Hench and Florence Ebersbach Hench. Alice graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1939 and married Andrew Fiske in 1952. Alice helped restore Sylvester Manor and its gardens to their 19th century glory. As the founder of the Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Massachusetts in Boston, she sponsored digs at Sylvester Manor. Alice was also a supporter of the Shelter Island Library, Shelter Island Historical Society, and the Shelter Island Garden Club.
