Biographical and Historical Note
The Gardiners of Shelter Island were descendents of Lion Gardiner, an early English settler and soldier in the New World. In 1639, Lion Gardiner purchased property from the Montaukett Native Americans after his support of the tribe during the Pequot War. With a grant from Charles I, Gardiner procured what became the first colonial English settlement in present-day New York state. What would become Gardiners Island in East Hampton, Suffolk County, was originally in its own jurisdiction affiliated with neither New York nor New England. In 1648, a royal British charter recognized the island as a wholly contained colony, independent of both New York and Connecticut. It was not until the American Revolution was the property declared under New York and East Hampton authority. Gardiners Island has been privately owned for over three hundred years by Lion Gardiner's descendants, and is the only real estate still intact as part of an original royal grant from the English Crown. This record group features the life and work of Samuel Smith Gardiner and his wife Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu Gardiner.

Biographical Note
Son of Captain Abraham Gardiner (1763 - 1796) and Phebe Dayton, Samuel Smith Gardiner (1789 - 1859) was a member of the prominent and wealthy Gardiner family, who traced their ancestry to early settler Lion Gardiner. Samuel Smith Gardiner was educated at Williams College in Massachusetts, managed the Shelter Island estate, and practiced law in Suffolk County and larger New York. Gardiner was one of the secretaries of the NY State Constitutional Convention of 1821, and a member of the NY State Legislature from 1823-1824. Gardiner wed Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu on August 7, 1823. Debt forced the Dering Family to place the Sylvester Manor estate at auction and Samuel Smith Gardiner purchased the manor house and 578 acres for $10,400. Samuel Smith Gardiner and Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu Gardiner's three daughters Mary L'Hommedieu Gardiner, Phoebe Dayton Gardiner, and Frances Eliza Gardiner would later inherit Samuel's estate. After Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu Gardiner passed away on January 28, 1838, Samuel Smith Gardiner married Susan F. Mott in the mid-1840s, the daughter of Henry Franklin and the widow of William W. Mott. Samuel Smith Gardiner passed away on March 21, 1859.
Samuel Smith Gardiner business management records in the form of accounts, bills, deeds, estate documents, and statements are included in the Horsford Family Papers (1681-1954) at the Rensselaer Institute Archives and Special Collections in Troy, NY.

John Tyler (March 29, 1790 – January 18, 1862) was the tenth President of the United States (1841–1845). He was elected vice president on the 1840 Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison, and became president after his running mate's death in April 1841. Harrison's death made Tyler the first vice president to succeed to the presidency without being elected to the office. The personal papers of the Tyler Family can be found at the Special Collections Research Center at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, while the executive papers of John Tyler while he was Governor of Virginia can be found at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA.

Julia Gardiner Tyler (May 17, 1820 – July 10, 1889) was the second wife of John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States, and served as First Lady of the United States from June 26, 1844 to March 4, 1845. Julia Gardiner Tyler was born in 1820 on Gardiner's Island off the eastern tip of Long Island, New York, one of the largest privately owned islands in the United States. She was the daughter of David Gardiner, a prominent landowner and New York State Senator from 1824 - 1828, and his wife Juliana (née McLachlan). Julia was raised in the New York town of East Hampton as well as in the small hamlet of Bay Shore, Long Island; Bay Shore was called Penataquit until 1868, and even earlier, Awixa. Manuscripts documenting Julia Gardiner Tyler's life are preserved at the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary, the East Hampton Library, the Library of Congress, the Virginia Historical Society, and the Yale University Library.

Series B: Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu Gardiner
Scope and Contents
Record Group III, Series B pertains to Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu Gardiner's personal life in the form of correspondence, financial records, and juvenilia. Genres range from letters and gifts, meeting minutes and receipts, original and collected poetry, to penmanship practice materials, and testimonies of religious faith. This subseries is dominated by items that capture Gardiner's conversations with family members, friends, and school acquaintances in reference to courtship, education, family, faith, marriage, and travel. These exchanges also include those between Mary and Samuel during the events leading up to their marriage. Mary's childhood penmanship practice materials also speak to the writing traditions of the time period.
These materials are lightly arranged alphabetically by surname of the individual in contact with Gardiner or the conversation subject. In the case that a record includes more than one date expression, the listing will begin with its earliest. If an item is physically undated, approximate ranges are provided. These records are noted "undated" and followed by a "circa" estimate determined by the range represented in the same series.
Biographical Note
Mary Catherine L'Hommedieu Gardiner (July 6, 1806 - January 28, 1838) was the only daughter of Ezra and Mary L'Hommedieu. She married Samuel Smith Gardiner in 1823 and gave birth to three daughters: Mary L'Hommedieu Gardiner in 1824, Phoebe Dayton Gardiner in 1826, and Frances Eliza Gardiner (Fanny) in 1832. Mary and Phoebe would both marry Eben Norton Horsford, whose personal and professional life are documented in Record Group IV: Horsford Family. Frances married George Martin Lane, a Harvard professor of Latin Language and Literature, in 1857.
