Record Group I: Sylvester, Brinley, and Lloyd Families
Scope and Contents
Record Group I includes Sylvester, Brinley and Lloyd family items dating from 1649 to 1786. These documents provide evidence of an early northern provisioning plantation actively involved in the Atlantic trades and employing African slave labor, Native Americans, and early European settlers. Financial and accounting evidence of trading activities as well as a number of wills and land ownership documents of various family members provide detailed inventories of possessions during this period.
Series A: Sylvester Family

Record Group I, Series A: Sylvester Family consists of financial records, legal records, and personal and professional correspondence. Genres range from deeds of property sales, enfranchisements, grants, indentures, inventories, and wills, to bills, bonds and receipts, to letters, notation, and genealogical research. This series also includes the earliest evidence of African American slavery on Shelter Island in the form of Grissell (Grizzell) Sylvester's last will and testament, dated 1685. These papers lightly refer to Shelter Island manorial business but also include accounts and ledgers of merchant activities in Boston while the settlement identified as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
This series is dominated by sales and settlement papers concerning Horse Neck, a property on the northern shore of Long Island. Horse Neck was purchased by Nathaniel Sylvester for his daughter Grissell (Grizzell) (1654-1691), who was engaged to be married to Latimer Sampson, who died before they were wed. Grissell then married Boston merchant James Lloyd, who appears in this series as well as in Series C: Lloyd Family. Following a dispute over the ownership of the Horse Neck property purchased by Nathaniel Sylvester and given to Latimer Sampson, it was determined that Sampson's will entitled the property to Grissell and therefore, Lloyd.
The name "Horse Neck" was originally used by Huntington farmers who grazed horses there in the 17th century. Matinecock Native Americans sold Horse Neck (or Caumsett, "place by sharp rock") to English settlers from Oyster Bay in 1654 before Boston merchant James Lloyd acquired the property in 1676. On March 8, 1685, Lieutenant Governor Thomas Dongan granted James Lloyd the royal patent for Horse Neck, formally renaming it the "Manor of Queens Village," annexed to Oyster Bay, Queens County. James Lloyd remained in Boston, renting the property out to tenant farmers, but in 1711 his 24-year-old son, Henry, gave up a shipping business in Newport, Rhode Island, to farm the Manor. His "salt box" home, the Henry Lloyd Manor House, stills survives on the grounds of Caumsett State Historic Park, where it has been restored, maintained, and interpreted by the Lloyd Harbor Historical Society.
What was once referred to as Horse Neck is now called Lloyd Neck, and is part of Lloyd Harbor, a village in Suffolk County, while the Incorporated Village of Lloyd Harbor is located in the town of Huntington, Long Island, New York. The Papers of the Lloyd Family of the Manor of Queens Village, Lloyd Neck, Long Island, New York in book (1654-1826) and manuscript form (1654-1822) are preserved at the New York Historical Society.

If an item is physically undated, approximate ranges are provided. These items are noted "undated" and followed by a "circa" estimate determined by the range represented in the same series.
Biographical Note
The Sylvester Family was involved in the original purchase of Shelter Island in 1651 for the purposes of establishing a provisioning plantation for its Barbados sugar operations. Nathaniel Sylvester (1610 - 1680) was a member of an English merchant family that had briefly relocated to the Netherlands before moving to Barbados to manage the family's interests in a sugar plantation. He married Grissell (Grizzell) Brinley (1635 - 1687), who was the daughter of Francis Brinley, a merchant of some wealth based in Boston and Rhode Island. The couple came to live on Shelter Island in 1652 as the first Europeans to permanently settle there. The couple produced eleven children, including Giles (Gyles) Sylvester (1657 - 1704), who inherited the heart of the estate from his father, while portions were given to the four other sons (portions of the island had also been given to Constant Sylvester). The Sylvesters were sympathetic to the Quaker religion, and provided shelter to several of its followers during persecutions in other areas of New England. After Nathaniel's death, the property was no longer affiliated with the sugar plantation in Barbados that had been operated by Nathaniel's brother Constant. Giles (Gyles) Sylvester died without heir and following a legal dispute, the property passed to Brinley Sylvester (1694 - 1752), Giles' nephew via his brother Nathaniel II. Brinley Sylvester pursued trading and other maritime merchant activities. He married Mary Burrough and had two daughters, of which Mary Sylvester would marry Thomas Dering and later inherit the estate.

Lion Gardiner (1599 – 1663), an early English settler and soldier in the New World, founded the first English settlement in what became the state of New York on Long Island. His legacy includes Gardiners Island, which is held by his descendants. John Winthrop (January 12, 1587 - March 26, 1649) was a wealthy English Puritan lawyer and one of the leading figures in the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the first major settlement in what is now New England after Plymouth Colony. The Winthrop Family Papers are preserved at the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Sir Edmund Andros (December 6, 1637 – February 24, 1714) was an English colonial administrator in North America. He was the governor of the Dominion of New England during most of its three-year existence. Andros served as governor of the provinces of New York, East and West Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland. Before his service in North America, he served as bailiff of Guernsey. Andros' tenure in New England was authoritarian and turbulent, as his views were decidedly pro-Anglican, a negative quality in a region home to many Puritans. His actions in New England resulted in his overthrow during the 1689 Boston revolt. Records documenting Andros' professional life are preserved at the New York Historical Society and the National Archives in Surrey, England.

While this series lightly refers to family conversations about estate settlements, financial transition, and marriage, it is dominated by property management dealings in Rhode Island and records documenting trade in Boston, MA from Francis Brinley, the eldest son of Thomas Brinley, brother of Nathaniel Sylvester's wife Grissell (Grizzell). This series' provenance is unique within the Sylvester Manor Archive as it is largely a research series, full of records purchased by Andrew Fiske and added for relevance. These records are marked with [Fiske Purchase] to indicate this difference. Biographical Note
The Brinley Family Papers are preserved at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Special Collections and University Archives in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, in which the following biographical and historical content is provided:
Englishmen and colonial Americans, Loyalists and Patriots, colonial Canadians and American citizens, the members of the Brinley family were a diverse group of characters, ranging from auditors to officers, businessmen, lawyers, legislators, book-collectors, historians, aristocratic ladies and housewives, devoted mothers, husbands, and fathers. A few were slave-holders. Yet through decades of tumultuous social and political change, the family maintained certain distinctive traits and traditions, clinging most notably to their strong ties to England and to the status quo at home. The Brinleys were wealthy, business-minded members of the colonial elite, profoundly Protestant, and most were highly educated and steeped in knowledge. Many became prominent public figures and many more served their respective nations in uniform.
The roots of the Brinley family extend back to England, where the common ancestor of the North American branch of the family, Thomas Brinley (1591 - 1661), served as Auditor of the Revenue for James I and Charles I. Thomas' daughter Grissell (Grizzell) was married to Nathaniel Sylvester. When Thomas' eldest son Francis (1626 - 1719) emigrated to Newport, Rhode Island in the mid-seventeenth century, the family's wealth and prestige were transplanted with him. This series documents Francis' professional life as a merchant.

Biographical Note
Horse Neck was purchased by Nathaniel Sylvester for his daughter Grissell (Grizzell) (1654-1691), who was engaged to be married to Latimer Sampson, who died before they were wed. Grissell then married Boston merchant James Lloyd (d. 1698), who appears in this series as well as Series A: Sylvester Family. Following a dispute over the ownership of the Horse Neck property purchased by Nathaniel Sylvester and given to Latimer Sampson, it was determined that Sampson's will entitled the property to Grissell and therefore, Lloyd.
The name "Horse Neck" was originally used by Huntington farmers who grazed horses there in the 17th century. Matinecock Native Americans sold Horse Neck (or Caumsett, "place by sharp rock") to English settlers from Oyster Bay in 1654 before James Lloyd acquired the property in 1676. On March 8, 1685, Lieutenant Governor Thomas Dongan granted James Lloyd the royal patent for Horse Neck, formally renaming it the "Manor of Queens Village," annexed to Oyster Bay, Queens County. James Lloyd remained in Boston, renting the property out to tenant farmers, but in 1711 his 24-year-old son, Henry, gave up a shipping business in Newport, Rhode Island, to farm the Manor. His "salt box" home, the Henry Lloyd Manor House, stills survives on the grounds of Caumsett State Historic Park, where it has been restored, and is maintained and interpreted by the Lloyd Harbor Historical Society.
Horse Neck is now called Lloyd Neck, and is part of Lloyd Harbor, a village in Suffolk County, while the Incorporated Village of Lloyd Harbor is located in the town of Huntington, Long Island, NY. The Papers of the Lloyd Family of the Manor of Queens Village, Lloyd Neck, Long Island, NY in book form (1654-1826) and manuscript form (1654-1822) are preserved at the New York Historical Society.

John Bowne (1627 – 1695) was an English immigrant residing in the Dutch colony of New Netherland, who is honored today as a pioneer in the American struggle for religious liberty. With his wife Hannah Feake (1637 - 1678), great-niece of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts, they relocated to Flushing, Long Island in 1661 to practice Quakerism. John Bowne's journal and related papers are preserved at the New York Historical Society.

Isaac Norris (July 21, 1671 – June 4, 1735) was a merchant and prominent figure in provincial Pennsylvania, including mayor of Philadelphia in 1724. In 1694 he married Mary, daughter of Thomas Lloyd, president of the council. Their son, Isaac, succeeded his father in business and also became active in politics, serving as speaker of the Assembly. Norris was a slave trader and owner. He and Mary Lloyd freed many of the slaves during their lifetimes or in their wills. Their children, including Elizabeth and Isaac Norris, Jr., freed the rest of them. The Papers of Isaac Norris (1742-1860) are preserved at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
