Series XI: Objects
Scope and Contents note
This series consists of objects and props from Mabou Mines productions. Of particular interest are the puppets Rose [ Shaggy Dog Animation] and John [ Prelude to Death in Venice], and the shadow puppets from the MahabharANTa.
Historical Note
The shadow puppets 133.2.0023 through 133.2.0053 were made for MahabharANTa, written by Lee Breuer and performed in 1992 in the United States. Larry Reed facilitated the collaboration between Lee Breuer and Balinese shadow master (dalang), I Wayan Wija. Wija made the rawhide puppets in 1992 in Bali. In an interview, he said he made all the puppets, except the wooden handles, which were custom-made by local artisans. Shadow puppets made of paper and found materials were not created by I Wayan Wija.

Scope and Content note
Rose, a puppet created by Linda Hartinian, measures 44" long, 15" wide, 6" deep, and is stored in box 319. Rose has long, dark brown hair and is dressed in a long-sleeved black jumpsuit with black corduroy shoes.
Rose's accessories include a painted head with two detachable wigs, a blue turtleneck and jeans, red sneakers and white socks, blue beaded elastic bands, a pink satin heart (all stored in box 320), a fur-lined denim jacket, a taxidermied paw, a gray sweatsuit, a black and metallic-colored kimono, beige satin cushions embroidered with red roses, and a beige satin band with velcro, and clear plastic poles used to control the puppet (all stored in box 321). Rose's costumes were created by Sally Rosen and Dru-ann Chukram.
Rose's head is double-sided, featuring two distinct faces. The first is painted a pale yellow-beige color with a long, wavy brown wig and the second face, directly on the other side, seemingly depicts an older woman. It has a slightly darker, more pink skin tone and a long, wavy gray wig. A wooden dowel is attached to the bottom of the double-sided head.
Rose's fur-lined denim jacket is split vertically along the back from the bottom hem to its collar to accommodate Rose's puppeteer.
John--A Prelude to Death in Venice, 1977

Scope and Contents note
John the puppet measures 51" long, 19" wide, 8" deep, and is stored in box 322. The puppet has brown hair and is dressed in a navy blue knitted cap, a red scarf tied around the neck, light blue button down shirt, brown leather jacket, blue jeans, navy blue socks, and black leather shoes. John does not have arms or hands. In the play, the actor inserts their hands into John's sleeves and uses them as John's hands. John was designed and constructed by Linda Hartinian.
John's accessories include a navy blue knit beanie hat, a navy blue T-shirt with a boys' summer camp logo, a Kodak camera, a striped corduroy cushion, a beige band with a blue tie closure, and foam knee pads with velcro straps that were likely used by his puppeteer (all stored in box 323).
