Scope and Contents

This series contains personal and govermental documents issued to Remarque and his family. It includes marriage certificates, travel documents (including passports), certificates, ticket stubs, tax documents, driver's licenses, citizenship documents, leases, documents related to the villa in Porto Ronco, and other documents. Other materials in the series reflect Remarque and his family's persecution by the Nazis--his sister, Elfriede Scholtz was put to death by the Nazis in 1943.
