The majority of the collection consists of cabinet photographs. The sitters in the portraits are largely unidentified, though each photograph includes the name of the photographer or the photographic studio that created the photograph. The address of the studio is often included as well.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
A portion of the collection was a gift of Clark S. Marlor, 1991. The items in accession 2022.025 and the portrait of Elmira Douglas were the gift of Shelley Cardiel. The tintype from Estabrook's Ferrotypes was a transfer from the Summit Historical Society, 2020. The portrait from Sheppard studio was the gift of Bonnie L. Miller, 2019. The portrait from Jacob's Studio was the gift of Joann Lindstrom, 2019. The Crawford portrait was an unsolicited donation from an unknown sender. The portrait from Van Doorn was a transfer from the Historical Society of Frederick County, 2023. The source and date of acquisition for the remainder of the collection are unknown.
