Abstract

Included in the collection are both studio and informal portraits of Gilman L. Smith (b. 1898), informal portraits of Emma Karstensen Smith (b. 1902), and group portraits that include Gilman L. Smith, as well as his friends and family. Several photographs show Gilman Smith in a sailors uniform. Other photographs show street views of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, where it is presumed the Smiths lived.

Biographical note

Gilman L. Smith was born on February 15, 1898 and grew up in Brooklyn. On February 23, 1929, he married Emma Karstensen (b. 1902) who was also from Brooklyn. Gilman and Emma Smith had at least one child, Verna E. Smith.

Scope and Contents

The Verna E. Smith family photographs consist of 13 black-and-white photographic prints and three black-and-white film negatives, dating from circa 1910 to 1930. Included in the collection are both studio and informal portraits of Gilman L. Smith (b. 1898), informal portraits of Emma Karstensen Smith (b. 1902), and group portraits that include Gilman L. Smith, as well as his friends and family. Several photographs show Gilman Smith in a sailors uniform. Other photographs show street views of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, where it is presumed the Smiths lived. The photographs range in size from 2.5 x 3.5 inches to 5 x 7 inches.
