Abstract

The Dinanda Nooney At Home in Brooklyn photographs date from 1976 to 1985 (bulk dates: 1978 to 1979) and contain 223 items. Photographs in the collection depict Brooklyn residents from a variety of age, ethnic, and economic groups in and near their homes. The collection is composed of interior and exterior views of apartments and houses, park scenes, street scenes, and photographs of residents engaged in social and family events.

Biographical note

Dinanda H. Nooney (1918-2004) was a documentary photographer and native New Yorker. Nooney's first extensive photographic project documented the collapsed West Side Highway in Manhattan in the mid 1970s. Nooney began photographing families throughout the borough of Brooklyn in 1976. Covering dozens of neighborhoods in the borough from Greenpoint to Sea Gate, Nooney documented over 150 families, completing the bulk of the work between 1978 and 1979. Photographs from the Brooklyn project were exhibited at the Long Island Historical Society in 1985, under the title At Home in Brooklyn.

Photographs in the collection depict Brooklyn residents from a variety of age, ethnic, and economic groups in and near their homes. The collection is composed of interior and exterior views of apartments and houses, park scenes, street scenes, and photographs of residents engaged in social and family events. Rooftop views are also included, showing the Gowanus and Sunset Park neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Neighborhoods photographed in the collection include Fort Greene, Greenpoint, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Boerum Hill, Sheepshead Bay, Carroll Gardens, Windsor Terrace, Cobble Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Prospect Park South, Sea Gate, Brooklyn Heights, Bay Ridge, Gowanus, and Sunset Park. Each photograph is identified by date, name of subject, street address, and neighborhood.

A copy of the At Home in Brooklyn exhibition catalog, dated 1985, is included with the collection.
