Abstract

All negatives in the collection are the work of William "Billy" Koch and are presumably set in Brooklyn, N.Y. Images show houses, farms, and street scenes, as well as portraits of groups and individuals outdoors.

Biographical note

William "Billy" Koch was an amateur photographer in Brooklyn, N.Y. The son of German immigrants Phillip and Elisabeth Koch, Billy Koch owned a tavern named Billy Cook's Saloon in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn. From 1912 to the mid-1950s, Koch worked in the real estate business with his uncle, also named William Koch.

Scope and Contents

The William Koch glass plate negatives contain 66 items with bulk dates from 1890 to 1910, with one film negative which appears to be from the 1920's. All negatives in the collection are the work of William "Billy" Koch and are presumably set in Brooklyn, N.Y. Images show houses, farms, and street scenes, as well as informal portraits of groups and individuals outdoors. The collection includes a mix of both urban residential scenes, which show delivery people and transit workers, as well as rural and wooded scenes, which show hunters and farmers.
