Abstract
The collection contains hand-colored slides with both photographs and illustrations. Images include battle scene illustrations; the shore of Bath Beach and Fort Hamilton; street scenes from Bay Ridge through the Prospect Park area to the Fulton Ferry landing; maps of Brooklyn showing skirmish lines and the movement of troops; and portraits of prominent British and American generals.
Biographical note
Rev. William Ten Eyck Adams was pastor of the Edgewood Reformed Church in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. The lantern slides in this collection originate from a 1901 lecture he delivered on the Battle of Long Island at churches and assemblies in Brooklyn.
Historical note
The Battle of Long Island occurred on August 27, 1776 in what is now the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y. The battle was the largest of the American Revolutionary War. It resulted in a victory for the British army and the retreat of the Continental Army through Manhattan and New Jersey into Pennsylvania.
Scope and Contents
The Rev. William Ten Eyck Adams lantern slide collection on the Battle of Long Island dates from circa 1901 and measures 1 linear foot with 91 lantern slides. The collection contains hand-colored slides with both photographs and illustrations. Images include battle scene illustrations; the shore of Bath Beach and Fort Hamilton; street scenes from Bay Ridge through the Prospect Park area to the Fulton Ferry landing; maps of Brooklyn showing skirmish lines and the movement of troops; and portraits of prominent British and American generals.
Some of the original glass plate negatives used by Rev. Adams to make the lantern slides are also included in this collection.
