Abstract

This collection includes World War I political cartoons from 1916-1918 clipped out of American and Canadian newspapers.

Historical Note

World War I started in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) fought against the Allied Powers (Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Canada, Japan and the United States). The United States entered the war in 1917 after German U-Boats attacked U.S. ships and the Lusitania, a British ocean liner carrying many American passengers, in 1915. The war ended in 1918 when Turkey, Austria-Hungary, and Germany surrendered.

Political cartoons reflect opinions on social and political events and were regularly published in newspapers and magazines by the end of the 19th century. Political cartoonists covered the events of World War I and the cartoons were published in newspapers across the United States.
