Abstract

This collection includes photographs of the Brooklyn Central YMCA Gymnastics team in the 1930s, as well as a program from the 25th anniversary Silver Jubilee celebration in 1956 and a typewritten history of the first 25 years of the team.

Historical Note

The Brooklyn Central YMCA Gymnastics Team was formed in 1931 by René Jules Kern. Kern was Assistant Director of Physical Education at the Brooklyn Central YMCA when he formed the gymnastics team and later became Director of Physical Education. The first team was made up of 12 men; women were admitted to the team in 1933.

The Team performed at the 1940 New York World's Fair, Madison Square Garden, colleges, schools, military bases, hospitals, and prisons.

This collection is arranged chronologically.

Scope and Contents

This collection includes mostly photographs of the Brooklyn Central YMCA Gymnastics Team from 1933 to 1939. The photographs are group portraits taken by The Fifth Avenue Photo Studio Inc. showing the team in different costumes and poses. Also included in the collection are a program from the 25th anniversary Silver Jubilee celebration in 1956 and a typewritten history of the first 25 years of the team written by former member Norman E. Hecht.
