Abstract

This collection includes 446 digital photographs, scans of items in the unprocessed Julius Wilcox photograph collection. The collection is a mix of cyanotypes, copy negatives, and contact prints from copy negatives, created by relatively unknown Brooklyn photographer, Julius Wilcox. Images are of Manhattan and Brooklyn, showing churches, bridges, street scenes, lodging houses, and various borough buildings.

Biographical note

Julius Wilcox was born in Vermont in 1837, later attending Middlebury College, where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. At the age of 29, Wilcox moved to New York City, where he worked at the New York Evening Gazette covering fashion and New York society. In the 1890s he became a partner in a bicycle business. He spent the years after the death of his wife in lodgings on Columbia Heights, where he died in 1924 at the age of 87.

This collection includes 446 digital photographs, scans of items in the unprocessed Julius Wilcox photograph collection. Subjects include Blackwell's Island (Roosevelt Island), lodging houses, churches, homes, street scenes in lower Manhattan, the Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges, and prominent buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
