Abstract

The collection consists of one portrait photograph of Emil J. Bartel, Jr. in uniform (circa 1917) and his death certificate issued by the U.S. Army (1918).

Biographical note

Emil Joseph Bartel was born on May 12, 1895 in Long Island City, New York to Emil Bartel and Frances Balda. He had four siblings: Anna, Lillian, Frances, and William. Emil Bartel, Sr. worked for the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, beginning at age 12 in their stables and eventually retiring as a manager. The family resided at 251 Windsor Place in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood of Brooklyn.

In November 1917, Bartel and his close personal friend, William Pritchard, who resided at 128 Linden Street in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, enlisted in Brooklyn's 13th Regiment of the National Guard. Bartel died on September 23, 1918 from wounds received in action while serving in the 59th Regiment, Coast Artillery Corps in France.

On April 10, 1923, the traffic circle located at the intersection of Prospect Park West and Prospect Park Southwest was named "Bartel-Pritchard Square" by the Board of Alderman in honor of Bartel and Pritchard.
