Abstract
The collection consists of the records of the Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association, as well as material which was collected by the association, dating from 1858 to 2014. This includes photographs, yearbooks, newsletters, college catalogs, event-related ephemera, and memorabilia. The collection documents the history of the Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing, from its inception in 1883 to its closing in 2013.
Historical note
The Long Island College Hospital (LICH) was founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 1858. The LICH Training School for Nurses, popularly known as the LICH School of Nursing, was established in 1883. Irene Sutcliffe, a graduate of the New York Hospital Training School, was selected to organize the school. The first class consisted of just three students. Irene Sutcliffe resigned her position in 1885 and was replaced by her twin sister, Ida Sutcliffe. During this period, the nurses' training program lasted two years, and there were no grades or examinations (the program would be expanded to three years in 1899).
The Alumnae Association of the Training School for Nurses was established in 1895. In 1904, Anne D. VanKirk replaced Isa Sutcliffe as head of the nursing school, and the school's training regimen was updated to conform with New York state guidelines. VanKirk was replaced by Miss E. Robinson, herself a graduate of the LICH School of Nursing, in 1920.
The school received temporary accreditation from the National League of Nursing in 1953. 1958 marked the first year that male students were admitted to the school. LICH became affiliated with Long Island University in 1960, which resulted in a new emphasis on academics at the nursing school (for the first time liberal arts were included in the school's curriculum). In 1962, the three year program was reduced back to a two year program (it would be shortened again to 22 months in 1975). The school switched academic affiliations twice in the ensuing years, to Packer Collegiate Institute in 1969 and then to St. Francis College in 1972.
In 1977 the school moved to St. Peter's School at 397 Hicks Street. The class of 1977 was the first to receive Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. The school's academic affiliation changed once again in 1979 to Brooklyn College. Evening classes were first established in 1981, and primarily catered to men who chose nursing as a second career.
In May 2011, LICH became part of the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and was renamed University Hospital of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital. Soon thereafter it was announced the LICH School of Nursing would no longer accept new students into its nursing program. The school officially closed in May 2013, and soon thereafter the Long Island College Hospital also closed.

Scope and Contents
The collection consists of the records of the Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association, as well as material which was collected by the association, dating from 1858 to 2014. This includes photographs, yearbooks, newsletters, college catalogs, event-related ephemera, and memorabilia. The collection documents the history of the Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing, from its inception in 1883 to its closing in 2013.
The records document the lives of nursing students from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Aspects of student life are illustrated extensively in the school's yearbooks, newsletters, and photographs. Special events, such as commencements and student recognition ceremonies (pinnings and cappings), are especially well documented. Some objects which belonged to students, such as nursing caps and commemorative pins, are also included in the collection.
The adminstration of the Alumnae Association is also documented in the collection. Researchers interested in the operations of the organization should consult Series 1: Articles of incorporation and by-laws, Series 2: Board of Directors meeting minutes, Series 3: Subject files series, and Series 6: Newsletters.
Nursing education and the school's curriculum is not extensively documented in the collection, although a small sampling of student work and handbooks can be found in Series 8: Students, alumni, and faculty and Series 10: Handbooks.

Series 4: Photographs, 1858-2013, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents
The series contains photographs and illustrations in a variety of formats (black-and-white prints, color prints, negatives, digital images, photocopies, and one slide) and sizes, dating from 1858 to 2013. It contains student portraits (classes and individuals), event photographs (graduation commencements, student recognition ceremonies, and other events), and promotional images used in publications.
Class portraits cover the following years: 1891, circa 1894, 1903, 1906-1911, 1914-1924, 1926-1965, 1969, 1972, 1975, 1978, 1980-1982, 1985-1986, 1989, 1995, 2003, 2006, circa 2008, circa 2010.
Additionally, a number of other group photographs can be found filed under various events from the 1960s through the 2000s.
Common events which are documented include graduation commencements and proms, student recognization ceremonies (including capping and pinning ceremonies), pot-luck dinners, Atlantic Avenue parades and fairs, and cancer survivor events.
The series contains one scrapbook which was assembled by Helen A. (Burgess) Gauthier (Class of 1920). It contains images of students, medical staff, friends, and LICH facilities, circa 1920.
Additional photographs can be found in Series 8: Students, alumni, and faculty.
Arrangement
The series is intellectually arranged chronologically by date. Please note that dates are based on the content of the image, not the date the print was created (therefore, a 20th century copy of an 1894 class portait would be dated as 1894). The photographs are physically arranged by size and format.

Series 5: Yearbooks, 1929-2012, inclusive; 1945-2012, bulk
Extent
Scope and Contents
The series contains LICH School of Nursing yearbooks, dating from 1929 to 2012. They were produced by nursing students and offer an overview of the year's graduating class, with focus paid to connections among students and faculty.
The yearbooks contain a letter from the dean to the students; a section featuring faculty members (and occasionally administrative staff); a graduating class portrait; individual portraits of the graduates (sometimes featuring a personalized blurb); candid photographs of students during their studies, as well as snapshots taken during leisure time showing interactions amongst students and faculty; advertisements for local businesses; and dedications to individual students and the graduating class.
Older yearbooks feature poetry and essays by students and faculty interspersed throughout the book. These feature thoughts and feelings on nursing and time spent at LICH SON.
The centennial edition of the yearbook in 1983 is notable for the comprehensive history of nursing included in the beginning of the book, which illuminates LICH SON's place in nursing history.
A few yearbooks contain handwritten notes and autographs of classmates.
Please note that the series does not contain yearbooks from the following years: 1883-1928, 1930-1944, 1952, 1966, 1970-1971, 1989-1991, 1995, 2001-2002 and 2013.

Series 6: Newsletters, 1930-2013, inclusive
Extent
Scope and Contents
The series contains the following publications: Nurses Alumnae Quarterly (1930), The Alumnae Bulletin (1937-1938), NALICH (1946-2006), Scope (1955-1968), Team Talk (1970, 1974), Main Artery (1978-1994), Information Line (2005), LICHSON Newsletter (2009), and LICHSON Chronicles (2013).
They represent the staff, students, and alumni experiences at the LICH School of Nursing from 1930 to 2013. Produced by staff members and students, the featured material ranges from campus events, to essays by patients at the hospital, to descriptions of alumnae vacations. This series presents a comprehensive look at a long standing teaching hospital in Brooklyn, New York. As the material begins in 1930, there is little to no information about the college from its founding in 1857 to 1929.
Nurses Alumnae Quarterly features articles about general health, new laboratory facilities, the Biennial Convention of 1930, obituaries, an original essay by a patient, and class news.
The Alumnae Bulletin was produced by the LICH Alumnae Association Publication and Press Committee in order to keep the students and staff informed about various activities of the Alumnae Association and the individual nurses. The Bulletin is formed from a compilation of the Nurses Alumnae Quarterly publication with additional items.
NALICH was produced by the Alumnae Association as a detailed account of alumnae and their current situation in life, a update on the association's events, a call for dues to be paid, and any noteworthy happenings at LICH. It includes a letter from the President of the association introducing the issue and providing some minutes of past meetings.
Scope was produced by LICH to provide information on happenings at LICH and the surrounding area. It features profiles of staff members, as well as the latest news reports on the hospital community. Noteworthy research being done at the hospital is also highlighted in the publication.
Team Talk was published by the LICH Public Relations Department. These issues feature information about the opening of a new building, as well as general renovations. Information about staff members is also included.
Main Artery was produced by the LICH Public Relations Department for hospital employees. It featured information about the different faculty departments with a focus on faculty biographies and special recognition for excellent service. Popular events are also listed and discussed.
Information Line was a newsletter produced for current students at the LICH School of Nursing. The issue features news for the student body about campus events and other school related announcements.
LICHSON Newsletter was produced by the school's Dean, Nancy M. DiMauro, in 2009. This issue is the first produced after a few years hiatus from any published newsletter for the school. It discusses the rejuvenation of the newsletter effort and a desire to reach out to the student body again and engage the alumni and current students in campus wide community events. Included is an autobiographical essay by LICH SON faculty member Irene Rempel.
LICHSON Chronicles was produced by the LICH SON newsletter staff from 2012 to 2013. This issue is the final issue as the school closed its doors in May 2013. It features information about school events, activities, student and faculty accomplishments, and community engagement.
