Abstract
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn publications, dated 1947 to 1971 and stored in one half manuscript box, include directories of the Diocese, annual reports of the Catholic Charities unit, and reports of the Superintendent of Schools. Directories, titled , list addresses and phone numbers for officials, churches, schools, hospitals, institutions, and agencies under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Annual reports for the Diocese Catholic Charities present financial data and a summary of activities of each division, such as Family Welfare, Division of Child Care, and Division of Health; also listed are advisory board, committee, and staff members of the Catholic Charities divisions. Reports of the Superintendent of Schools provide narrative accounts of Diocese schools' activities and statistics on the schools' populations.
Historical note
The Diocese of Brooklyn was formed in 1853 to oversee all Roman Catholic churches in Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties of New York state. Based on Joralemon Street in Downtown Brooklyn, the Diocese of Brooklyn has remained one of the most populous diocese in the country. The Diocese oversees church parishes, schools, and charities affiliated with the Catholic church. In 1957, the Diocese of Rockville Centre was established, and Nassau and Suffolk counties split from the Diocese of Brooklyn to join this new jurisidiction.
