Abstract
The Brooklyn Church Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church annual reports span the period 1883 to 1928. The Brooklyn Church Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was chartered in 1878.
Historical Note
The Brooklyn Church Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was chartered in 1878. Its purpose was to advise member churches on matters of debt, referee real estate transactions between member churches, and support Sunday schools and missionary work in Brooklyn. Around 1900, the Society began expanding its work to the borough of Queens, and eventually the Society included parts of Long Island in the scope of its work as well. Accordingly, between 1916 and 1921 the Society's official name changed to The Brooklyn and Long Island Church Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Scope and Contents
The Brooklyn Church Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church annual reports span the period 1883 to 1928. The reports include charters, constitutions and bylaws, listings of officers and committees, listings of managers elected by each member church, listings of individual members, details regarding the value of member churches' properties and indebtedness, treasurer's reports, receipts of member church collections, annual meeting summaries, historical notes on member churches, and officiaries of member churches. The colllection also includes a commemorative program for the Society's 25th anniversary celebration in 1903. The program features a group photograph of the Society's executive committee, an historical sketch of the Society, and an overview of Society's work.
