Abstract
The Charles Turnbull correspondence spans the period 1778 to 1791 and consists of a letter copybook containing correspondence between Charles Turnbull and his family members and friends. Turnbull served as a captain in the Pennsylvania militia during the Revolutionary War. The letters include correspondence between Charles in Pennsylvania and his wife and friends in British-occupied Brooklyn.
Biographical note
Charles Turnbull (b. circa 1754) served as a captain in the Pennsylvania militia during the Revolutionary War and was held as a British prisoner on Long Island. After being paroled, Turnbull became a Major of Artillery in the Continental Army. Following the war, he bought a 150 acre farm in Bedford, Long Island (later part of the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn). Turnbull was appointed High Sheriff of Kings County in 1789.

Turnbull's later letters focus on international commerce between the United States, London, and India.
A note on the inside cover of the volume reads, "Correspondence of Charles Turnbull and others - see Sons of Revolution certificate of Frank Graham Butts."
The latter section of the volume includes several poems and writings as well as genealogy information relating to the Crawford and Turnbull families.
