Abstract
The collection contains indentures, deeds, and the last will and testaments of the Hicks family of the Town of Flushing, Long Island, New York, dating from 1730 to 1788.
Biographical note
The Hicks family trace their roots to Robert Hicks. A native of Gloucestershire, England, he sailed from London to Plymouth, Massachusetts on the ship "Fortune" in 1621. He later settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts. His two sons, John and Stephen, purchased large tracts of land in Flushing and Hempstead, Long Island, New York. John Hicks had one son, Thomas Hicks, who was appointed the first judge of Queens County. He married twice and had twelve children. It is presumed that the Hicks family members represented in this collection are the sons of Judge Thomas Hicks, although this cannot be confirmed.
