Abstract

This collection consists of two documents: a copy of a 1758 indenture for land in the township of Brookland (Brooklyn) and a 1696 order to Garrett Middagh, tax collector of Brooklyn, to collect taxes.

Biographical note

Garrett Middagh was the son of Aert and Breckje Middagh. He married Cornelia James Cowenhoven in 1691, and together they owned a 30 acre farm near the ferry on the west side of Fulton Street near Henry Street in Brooklyn. In 1827, this farm descended to Middagh's relative Aert.

This small collection is housed in a single folder with no particular arrangement.

Scope and Contents

The Garrett Middagh papers span the period 1695 to 1758 and include a copy of an indenture for land in the township of Brookland (Brooklyn), dated August 16, 1758, for Garrett and Cornelia Middagh, and sold to Machiell Hanson; and an order to Garrett Middagh, tax collector of Brooklyn, to collect taxes, signed by Henry Filken, Justice of the Peace, dated February 5, 1696.
