Abstract
The Alexander Hamilton Bishop (1810-1854) papers span the period 1828 to 1879 (bulk: 1838-1839) and include correspondence, manuscripts, and copies of the Family Christian Almanac.
Biographical note
Reverend Alexander Hamilton Bishop was born on November 14, 1810 in New Haven, CT. He married Susan Holmes, who was the daughter of Obadiah Holmes (1790-1867) and Sarah Van Wyck (1793-1825), both of whom descended from from well-known Long Island families. Reverend Bishop was the pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church in Astoria, Queens County, Long Island. He died in New Haven on February 3, 1854.

Scope and Contents
The Alexander Hamilton Bishop papers span the period 1828 to 1879 (bulk: 1838-1839) and measure 0.2 linear feet. The papers include correspondence, manuscripts, and copies of the Family Christian Almanac. Also included are a travel journal kept by Susan Holmes during a trip to Europe, Asia Minor, and Africa from 1838 to 1839, before her marriage to Alexander Hamilton Bishop; a play written by Alexander Hamilton Bishop, titled It is Better Than it Appeared to Be, dated 1829; a certificate of membership in the American Tract Society for Mrs. Susan Bishop, dated 1842; two photographs of Gilbert Livingston Bishop, dated 1865 and 1879; and a drawing by Gilbert Livingston Bishop of a home (presumably the Bishop family home) in New Haven, CT, dated 1860.
