Abstract
One illustrated Bible belonging to the Bennett family. The Bible includes a pre-printed section dedicated to the recording of family genealogical information, in which handwritten records of birth, marriage, and death dates for members of the Bennett family spanning the period 1814 to 1936 are contained. This genealogical information also illuminates the Bennett family's relation to other multigenerational Brooklyn families, including the Bergen, Duryea, Remsen, and Suydam families.
Biographical Note
The Bennett (sometimes spelled "Bennet") family was a multigenerational Brooklyn family descended from William Adrianse Bennet, who in 1636 purchased land from the Canarsee Native Americans and became one of the first European settlers of the present-day neighborhood of Gowanus. Certain members of the Bennett family relocated to the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Flatbush, Flatlands, and Gravesend.
