Abstract

One letter from Platt Stratton of Flushing Bay, Queens County, to Oliver H. Jones of New York City, regarding the printing of an advertisement for property on the east side of Flushing Bay that Stratton would like to sell. The letter is accompanied by the handwritten advertisement, describing the dimensions of the property, that Stratton would like to have printed.

Biographical Note

Platt Stratton (1787-1854) was a resident of Flushing, Queens County, and was a merchant in the cotton and shipping firm of Stratton and Winthrop. Stratton co-owned and operated the ships Selma and Tuscalusa between New York and the ports of London and Mexico. Stratton's estate in Flushing stretched 350 acres and spanned nearly the entire waterfront of Flushing Bay. He and his wife, Elizabeth Hewlett Jones (1813-1893), had four children.
