One bound volume containing handwritten notes on a lecture given by Oliver Starr St. John on the Battle of Long Island at the Long Island Historical Society (now the Brooklyn Historical Society) in 1864.
Historical Note
The Battle of Long Island (also known as the Battle of Brooklyn) occurred on August 27, 1776 in what is now the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y. The battle was the largest of the American Revolutionary War. It resulted in a victory for the British army and the retreat of the Continental Army through Manhattan and New Jersey into Pennsylvania.
Biographical Note
Oliver Starr St. John (1814-1887) was a Presbyterian minister who resided in Brooklyn between 1865 and 1887, during which time he engaged in literary and missionary work. After 1874, he was the Assistant Editor of the New York Witness.
