Scope and Contents

Materials related to the Society's building at 128 Pierrepont Street and the Brooklyn Historical Society's location in Empire Stores (BHS DUMBO). Materials include building plans, construction proposals, bids, and contracts, facility inspection reports, reports and articles related to the history of 128 Pierrepont, minutes and correspondence from the initial Building Committee that oversaw fundraising and early repair work. Insurance coverage documents originally included in this series have been moved to Series 16: Financial records, Sub-series 16.7: Insurance.

Historical note

In October 1999, BHS embarked on a full-scale restoration of its building. Repairs to the building's roof were completed in 2002, allowing the interior restoration to proceed. This included repairing plasterwork, refinishing woodwork, and repainting the walls. During this restoration project, the elevator that had been installed in the central stairwell was removed and the stained glass laylight at the top of the stairwell was recreated. The project was led by the architectural firm Jan Hird Pokorny and the firm York Hunter served as the construction manager.
