Biographical Note
The Emans family (also spelled Emmons, Emmens, or Emmans) resided in the town of Gravesend in Kings County and were descendents of Andries Emans, who emigrated to the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (later New York) from the Netherlands in 1661.

This collection includes various papers relating to the Emans family of Gravesend throughout the period 1748 to 1881. The spelling of the family's surname varies throughout the collection; items dating from the 18th century mostly use the spelling Emans, while items dating from the 19th century mostly use the spelling Emmens, though the spellings of Emmons and Emmans are also used.
