Scope and Contents

This series consists of (roughly) 120 black-and-white photographic prints taken by A.R. Young from circa 1870 to 1880. The photographs depict views of locations in Brooklyn, Nassau County, and Suffolk County on Long Island. Locations in Brooklyn include the neighborhoods of Red Hook and Greenpoint, as well as views of Newtown Creek, Prospect Park, and Green-Wood Cemetery. Views of Long Island include areas in or near the towns of Mill Neck, Cold Spring Harbor, Roslyn, and Valley Stream, among others. Subjects include depictions of the built environment (historic houses, churches, mills, ferry terminals, cemeteries, and asylums, among others) and the natural environment (shorelines, ponds, and harbors, among others).
