Abstract

This collection is comprised of 16 digital photographs of the Jewish celebration of Purim in Williamsburg. These photographs document adults and children wearing masks and costumes in public settings.

Biographical / Historical

Melanie Einzig, born in 1967, is a New York City-based photographer. She moved to NYC in 1990 and studied at New York University/International Center of Photography. She worked for the Associated Press from 1998 to 2002 and then became a self-employed photographer. Einzig focuses on street photography and her work has been featured in several publications and exhibitions.

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of 16 digital photographs in .tif formats of the Jewish celebration of Purim in Williamsburg. Purim commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an Achaemenid Persian Empire official who was planning to kill all the Jews, as recounted in the Book of Esther. These photographs document adults and children wearing masks and costumes in public settings.
