Abstract
The collection contains the receipt book of Peter Conover, an auctioneer in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Biographical note
Peter Conover was born to Rachel Bergen (1761-1817) and Jacob Conover (1750-1836) on April 16, 1783 in Middletown, NJ. On July 14, 1819, he married Catharine (1789-1846), born to Joost and Ann Stillwell of Gravesend, and widow of Nicholas Van Dyck of Red Hook. Conover was cousin to Garret Bergen and resided with him at one point in Gowanus. He served in the War of 1812 and in 1825 ran for sheriff, but lost to John Wyckoff of New Lots. At that time, he was living in Red Hook, where his father had also owned property. Conover died on January 4, 1842.
