Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Original format: 1/2 inch open reel video; Transfer Technician Notes: "As with other tapes in this collection, there is an inherent constant sync error that is stabilized by time base correction, but ultimately results in moderate to severe flagging throughout. Additionally, there is a frequently severe skew error during the first third of content, which is triggered by inherent exposure adjustments during the performance. Skew and flagging contribute to mild to moderate jitter. Elsewhere, there are occasional mild dropouts and tape wear. Occasional inherent exposure adjustments and mild ghosting. Luma is adjusted to mitigate clipping from glare."

This flagging is generally above the performers, but intensifies in low lighting. Mild image jitter throughout. Elsewhere, there are frequent mild dropouts, and occasional tape damage. Occasional inherent exposure adjustments and mild ghosting. Luma is adjusted to mitigate clipping from glare. Audio distortion is inherent to the original recording."

Access copies
Access copies of Tape 2 are available at the University Archives.
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Original format: 1/2 inch open reel video; Transfer Technician Notes: "As with other tapes in this collection, there is an inherent constant sync error that is stabilized by time base correction, but ultimately results in various errors throughout. The first minute and 45 seconds have been captured with a different TBC than the rest of the tape. Jitter and flicker observed during this first portion was more acceptable here than in later portions. Similarly, the mild skew error observed for the majority of the tape was much more severe in this first portion. The combination of these two captures represents the best transfer possible. Elsewhere, there are occasional momentary sync errors, seemingly triggered by variations in exposure inherent to the content. Occasional dropouts and tape damage throughout. Head switch error visible throughout, especially pronounced during first segment."

Scope and Contents
Performers on this recording include Eubie Blake, Roland Hanna, and Danny Mixon.
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Original format: 1/2 inch open reel video; Transfer Technician Notes: "Content generally plays very well. There are several instances of image errors, notably when there is an abrupt shift in lighting. There is also mild image distortion, similar to bearding or jitter throughout. These artifacts are introduced by the TBC, but was determined to be the best possible capture when compared to errors presented by other TBCs. Otherwise, the content plays without major error."

Extent
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Original format: 1/2 inch open reel video; Transfer Technician Notes: "Majority of content is a presentation by Mark Lane, with some unrelated and/or establishing segments at the very beginning. These first 15 seconds suffer from severe tracking errors. Main segment doesn't begin until about one minute in. Content plays mostly well throughout, with occasional dropouts and tape wear, and one instance of tape damage. There is a scrolling diagonal band of interference that happens throughout, which appears to be inherent to the recording and caused likely by some sot of electrical interference. Occasional inherent exposure adjustments. Loud audio hiss is present throughout, with occasional inherent pops. Content ends abruptly at tail."

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Original format: 1/2 inch open reel video; Transfer Technician Notes: "Content exists on only about half of this tape. As with other tapes in this collection, the content suffers from a constant control track error that affects image stability, causing severe flagging and skew errors. These skew errors appear to be exacerbated during portions with bright exposure inherent to the original recording. The tape was tested with multiple TBCs - this capture represents the best transfer possible. Occasional crash records result in tracking and vertical hold errors. Occasional mild dropouts and tape damage. Mild head switch error visible throughout."

Original format: 1/2 inch open reel video; Transfer Technician Notes: "This tape contains only about 6 minutes of content. As with other tapes in this collection, there is an inherent, constant sync error that is stabilized by time base correction, but ultimately results in moderate to severe flagging throughout. This flagging is generally above the performers, but intensifies on tighter shots. Mild image jitter throughout. Elsewhere, there are occasional mild dropouts and tape wear, and one instance of tape damage. Occasional mild ghosting. Luma is adjusted to mitigate clipping from glare. Audio distortion is inherent to the original recording."

A persistent skew error is present in the bottom half of the frame throughout, with some portions more severe than others. This error was less problematic than errors introduced by other TBCs. Otherwise the content plays well, with one instance of momentary sync error, and one instance of minor tape damage. Occasional ghosting and inherent exposure adjustments throughout. Head switch error visible throughout. Mild audio distortion is inherent to the original recording."
Transfer Technician Notes AV2905: "Content plays well throughout. A persistent skew error affecting the bottom half of the frame is visible throughout, and contributes to moderate bearding. Occasional dropouts and mild tape wear throughout, with a couple instances of tape damage. Occasional tracking noise. Head switch error visible throughout. Mild inherent audio distortion. Content is inherently without audio for first minute."
Transfer Technician Notes AV2909: "This tape suffers from severe inherent sync errors that result in persistent image jitter and a high head switch error. Multiple captures were performed using combinations of different capture decks and TBCs, and this file represents the best capture possible. Aside from the aforementioned errors, glare from Odetta's guitar triggers an auto-exposure response from the TBC that severely dims the picture. Again, this error was troubleshooted using multiple TBCs, and could not be corrected. The glare occasionally clips the luma. Occasional tape wear and damage occur throughout. Audio distortion is inherent to original recording."
