Abstract
New York University (NYU) formed the Humanities Council in 1976 to offer cross-faculty, interdisciplinary humanities programs in the format of seminars, lectures, colloquia, and other events. Leslie Berlowitz was the Council's director from its creation until she left NYU in 1996, at which point the Council was disbanded. The Humanities Council Records (dated early 1970s-1996) include administrative files, grant applications and reports, and program and project files related to the Council's activities on NYU's campus and in collaboration with other institutions.
Historical Note
New York University created the Humanities Council in 1976 due to concern that college students were eschewing humanities studies in favor of technical and professional education, which was perceived as more valuable in the job market of the time. The Council was preceded by a Presidential Panel on Humanities and primarily aimed to plan humanities-centered, interdisciplinary programming for NYU faculty and students, including promoting humanities studies in NYU's professional schools. Leslie Berlowitz (née Tuttleton, 1944-2020) worked in the Office of Academic Affairs, was a member of the Council from its founding, and headed it until it was disbanded in 1996, at which time she left NYU.
The Humanities Council created interdisciplinary humanities programming for the NYU community, secondary and post-secondary education students in the New York City metro area, and for academics and professionals engaged in humanities work. In 1976, the Council introduced humanities seminars for NYU students, and colloquia for NYU faculty. In the late 1970s it also began planning programming explicitly for students of professional schools, and began sponsoring lectures, conferences, and symposia. Notably, the Council began working with visiting scholars to create the Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture Series. In 1979 the Council also began a joint humanities programming project with Rockefeller University. During the 1980s, the Council branched out to developing programming for high school students and educators. Towards the end of the 1980s and into the 1990s, the Council focused on larger, multi-year projects that offered a variety of programming centered around a single topic.
The Humanities Council was initially funded by a 1976 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and in 1978 received additional funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The latter was a challenge grant, which matched funds raised by NYU. The NEH challenge grant was renewed in 1983, when the University executed a fundraising campaign to create an endowment fund for the Council. Over its existence the Council also received funding from the Exxon Education Fund, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pew Memorial Trust, and other granting institutions. In its first decade, the Council received grants that provided more long-term, general funding, but over the course of time grants became more specific and tied to individual programs. In addition to planning programming directly, the Council also provided funds for seminars, lectures, readings, and other events planned by NYU faculty. It did so primarily through the Grant-in-Aid program, which ran from 1980 to 1992.
Arrangement
The records are arranged in five series. All series are arranged chronologically. The series arrangement of the records is as follows:
Series I: Administrative Files, 1976-1996
Series II: NYU Programming, 1976-1995
Series III: Outside Programming, 1977-1993
Series IV: Projects, 1982-1996
Series V: Audiovisual Recordings, 1976-1996
Scope and Contents
The Humanities Council Records (dated early 1970s-1996) include materials related to the founding, administration, funding, and programs of the Council. The majority of the collection is paper records, but each series contains electronic records as well as audiovisual materials. Research files on humanities education, committee records, promotional materials, grant applications and reports, and requests for funding from the Humanities Council document the overall planning and administration of the Council. Different types of programming, including seminars, lectures, symposia, conferences, readings, discussion sessions, exhibitions, and tributes, are documented by correspondence with potential participants; promotional materials including brochures, posters, and fliers; mailing lists; event invitations and scripts; and audiovisual recordings. Later projects, which were often planned in concert with events at other institutions, are also represented by correspondence, planning meeting files, calendars, and promotional materials related to events outside of NYU. Overall, the Humanities Council Records document trends in academic humanities studies during its 20 years of existence. Funding documentation, particularly grant proposals and reports, but also visits from and lectures by representatives of public granting institutions, also show changes in the nature of funds available for this type of programming. Files from individual events provide information on specific topics and subjects. The Council consistently devoted resources to humanities education for professional students across all of its programming, and themes related to the bicentennials of the U.S. Constitution and the French Revolution are explored in all aspects of the Humanities Council's activities.

About this Guide
Processing Information
Paper materials were placed in new acid-free folders and boxes, and oversized materials were unfolded and placed in appropriately sized folders and flat boxes. All audiovisual media was placed in new boxes and assigned and labeled with unique identifiers. Files were grouped by subject and arranged into series and subseries. Materials were physically brought together when possible, and oversize materials, audiovisual recordings, and electronic records were intellectually integrated into the file lists. Files are listed chronologically within series and subseries. Original folder titles were retained when possible, and assigned by an archivist when necessary.
48 floppy disks were forensically imaged, analyzed, and arranged in Forensic Toolkit. New York University Libraries follow professional standards and best practices when imaging, ingesting, and processing born-digital material in order to maintain the integrity of the content.

Historical Note
The Humanities Council's primary function was planning, supporting, and promoting interdisciplinary humanities instruction and events for the New York University community. In its early years, the Council focused on creating seminar-style classes, organizing colloquia for NYU faculty members, and planning lectures. Colloquia topics were often repeated several years in a row. The Council worked with visiting scholars from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s to develop programming, primarily planning lectures for the Distinguished Lecture Series. Other lectures and lecture series were planned to tie into events, such as the Bicentennial of the American Constitution, the 25th anniversary of Vatican II, and the 10th anniversary of the Humanities Council. In 1984, NYU Emeritus Professor Sidney Hook was chosen to deliver the National Endowment for the Humanities's 13th Annual Jefferson Lecture, which he gave at NYU and the Council had a large hand in planning the event.
During the late 1980s, the Council moved away from supporting seminars and long-running lecture series and programmed events of different formats on a more case-by-case basis. The Council engaged in planning symposia, conferences, readings, tributes, and exhibitions over the 20 years it operated, but these events were more prevalent in the Council's later years. Many of these events were planned in cooperation with other offices of the University, including the Institute for African American Affairs, the Libraries, and Ireland House.
The Council also planned programming for students at NYU's medical and dental schools, and these events followed a similar pattern: more structured, recurring programs, such as the Medical School Honors Lecture Series, dominated during the Council's first decade of operation, with fewer and less structured programs in the Council's second decade.

Series III: Outside Programming (dated 1977-1989) contains records documenting the Humanities Council's efforts to promote interdisciplinary humanities studies among working professionals, other post-secondary educational institutions, and high schools. The documents in this series, particularly those related to the Summer Institute, show programming focused on the bicentennials of the U.S. Constitution and the French Revolution, which were topics of other Council programming created for an audience of working humanists and university students. The Council also worked with the New York Council on Humanities (NYCH) on programming targeted to working humanists, including conferences and lectures.
Arrangement
This series has been arranged into three subseries. Files are arranged chronologically within subseries. The subseries arrangement of the records is as follows:
Subseries III.A NYU and Rockefeller University Joint Program in the Humanities, 1979-1989
Subseries III.B New York Council on Humanities, 1979-1992
Subseries III.C High School Humanities Education, 1983-1989
Historical Note
Shortly after its inception, the Humanities Council sought to partner with other institutions in the New York City metro area to support the humanities and humanities education beyond New York University. From 1979-1989, the Council participated in a joint humanities program with Rockefeller University (RU), wherein humanists from NYU led interdisciplinary humanities programming on the RU campus, and scientists from RU gave lectures for the NYU community. Rockefeller University specializes in scientific and medical education, and the Rockefeller/NYU Joint Program in the Humanities fit into the Council's broader aims to integrate humanities instruction into science, health, and professional programs. The Council also engaged with high school humanities instruction through two programs: the Rockefeller Foundation-funded High School Humanities Project, which ran from 1983 to 1988, and the Summer Institute, which was funded by the National Endowment for Humanities and ran from 1985 to 1989. The Council also liaised with the New York Council on the Humanities (NYCH) to plan conferences and lectures and to organize NYCH board meetings.

Subseries III.C High School Humanities Education (dated 1983-1989) includes documents related to the Humanities Council's High School Humanities Project and the Summer Institute. The High School Humanities Project is represented by research files on high school education, correspondence with local high school administrators in New York City, and the Rockefeller Foundation grant reports and re-application. This subseries also includes paper and electronic budget files. Student newspapers and oral history projects from Seward High School provide examples of schools' High School Humanities Project activities. Most of the materials related to the Summer Institute are related to the "Age of Democratic Revolution" sessions. These include an National Endowment for the Humanities grant proposal for that specific project, semi-annual reports, and expense reports. There are also calls for proposals from the Council, curricular materials, posters, and planning files particular to the American Constitution Bicentennial and French Revolution Bicentennial sessions. This subseries also includes issues of the Summer Institute's "COLLABORATIVE" newsletter and a proposal for a session focused on Shakespeare.
Historical Note
The Humanities Council was involved in two significant projects that focused on improving high school humanities education standards. The first was the High School Humanities Project, which ran from 1983 to 1988 and was funded with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. For this project, the Council facilitated resource sharing between New York City public high schools and activities such as student-led oral histories. In 1985, the Council began the Summer Institute, a series of seminars on NYU's campus for high school teachers during summer break. In 1987 and 1988, the Summer Institute sessions were built around the theme of "The Age of Democratic Revolution," with the 1987 session covering the bicentennial of the ratification of the United States Constitution and the 1988 session devoted to the bicentennial of the French Revolution. The National Endowment for the Humanities funded the "Age of Democratic Revolution" Summer Institute sessions.

Series VI: Projects (dated 1982-1996) documents the planning, promotion, and execution of large-scale Humanities Council programming projects. Project-specific grants funded most of these projects, and this series contains grant proposals, reports, and supporting documentation prepared for granting institutions. The book projects in this series, America in Theory and Greenwich Village: Culture and Counterculture, are documented with correspondence with contributors and publishers, drafts, publicity materials, and press clippings. The Greenwich Village, French Revolution, and Columbus Quincentenary project files include planning committee materials, topical research files, and information about related projects planned by other institutions. Files for all other projects besides America in Theory contain similar document types including correspondence with potential participants, event brochures and programs, invitations, lists of invitees, posters, and sometimes audio or video recordings of events.
Arrangement
This series has been arranged into four subseries. Files are arranged chronologically within subseries. The subseries arrangement of the records is as follows:
Subseries IV.A Greenwich Village, 1982-1992
Subseries IV.B French Revolution Bicentennial, 1986-1990
Subseries IV.C Christopher Columbus Quincentennial, 1988-1993
Subseries IV.D Other Projects, 1986-1996
Historical Note
By the late 1980s, the Humanities Council pivoted to planning programming in the context of a multi-year series of events focused on a specific topic instead of organizing events by format, for example, a series of lectures on varied topics. Between roughly 1986 and 1996, the Council planned large projects on the themes of Greenwich Village history and culture (bulk 1988-1992), the bicentennial of the French Revolution (1986-1990), and the Quincentenary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas (1988-1983). The Council also planned programming related to the 100th birthday of Walt Whitman, the 150th birthday of Henry James, the 100th anniversary of cinema, and as a part of the Center for Atlanta History's "Exploring the Color Line" program. In 1988 America in Theory, an essay collection edited by Council director Leslie Berlowitz, was published.

Subseries IV.A Greenwich Village (dated 1982-1992) contains files related to the book Greenwich Village: Culture and Counterculture, the "Within Bohemia's Borders" exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY), and related programming and events developed and produced by the Council between 1989 and 1991. The book is documented by correspondence with Rutgers University Press, essay drafts interfiled with correspondence from contributing authors, press clippings, and planning files for a book launch event. The "Within Bohemia's Borders" exhibition at MCNY is represented with a poster, fliers, and correspondence between the Council and MCNY. Events planned as part of this project include lectures, film screenings, receptions, and readings, which are documented by correspondence with participants, invitations, posters, other promotional materials, and, in some cases, audio recordings of the event. Records of the Greenwich Village planning committee, the National Endowment for the Humanities grant proposal, press clippings, and publicity materials, including advertisements and press releases are also included and document the project as a whole.
Historical Note
In its early years, the Humanities Council sponsored projects and programming related to Greenwich Village. In the late 1980s, it began to plan cohesive programming to celebrate the Greenwich Village neighborhood. Leslie Berlowitz and Rick Beard edited Greenwich Village: Culture and Counterculture, a volume of essays on the history and culture of the area published by Rutgers University Press in 1993. Many of the essays in this volume had previously been published in Around the Square, 1830-1890: Essays on Life, Letters, and Architecture in Greenwich Village, published by NYU Press in 1982. In addition to publishing Greenwich Village: Culture and Counterculture, the Council also collaborated with the Museum of the City of New York on an exhibit titled "Within Bohemia's Borders" which opened in 1989, and planned lectures, readings, receptions, art exhibitions, and other programs that took place on NYU's campus and in Greenwich Village from 1989 through 1991. A National Endowment for the Humanities grant partly funded the Greenwich Village project.

Subseries IV.C French Revolution Bicentennial (dated 1986-1990) contains files from the New York City area planning committee, the NYU planning committee, and the proposal, interim, final, and expense reports related to the National Endowment for the Humanities grant. The overall program is documented with calendars for NYU and NYC area events, press clippings, publicity materials including posters and brochures, budgets, and event photographs. Grant reports and project budgets are documented with born-digital and paper records. The Council produced a French Revolution study guide, and this subseries includes background research files, drafts, and copies of the guide. The Florence J. Gould Lecture Series is documented with audio recordings of the lectures.
Historical Note
The Humanities Council began planning programming related to the 1989 bicentennial of the French Revolution in 1986, and facilitated related events in 1988 and 1989. Many educational and cultural institutions marked the Bicentennial with events, programs, and publications, and NYU was part of a New York City area consortium of institutions recognizing the milestone. The French government supported these efforts globally, and French President François Mitterand visited NYU in 1988 and gave a convocation speech. A National Endowment for the Humanities grant partially funded the French Revolution project at NYU. The Florence J. Gould Foundation funded "The French Revolution and its Modern Legacy" lecture series. Some of these lectures were also broadcast on WNYU.

Scope and Contents
Subseries IV.C Christopher Columbus Quincentennial (dated 1988-1993) contains records documenting project planning, including research files, records of planning committees both inside and outside of NYU, budgets, correspondence, and program and speaker proposals. The subseries also includes files on outside institutions that commemorated the quincentenary and quincentenary events in the greater New York City area. Marketing and publicity materials and press clippings document how the Council's project and the Columbus Quincentenary were discussed, promoted, and received. It also includes a study guide produced by the Council, event programs, materials related to the National Endowment for the Humanities grant, and other funding sources. "Crosscurrents of Culture" events are documented by correspondence with participants, invitations, summaries or transcripts, posters, flyers, brochures, and lists of invitees. Some events are also documented by audio recordings, and one, the Voices of the Encounter Symposium, is documented with a video recording as well.
Historical Note
In 1992, many cultural and educational institutions marked the quincentennial anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in North America, and the Humanities Council began planning its programs in 1988. The Council participated in New York City metro area planning groups, including the Columbus Consortium and the Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Commission. The Council planned programming under the broader title "Crosscurrents of Culture." These events included lectures, symposia, and art exhibitions during the 1991-1992 academic year. They focused on topics related to European history during Columbus's lifetime and the effects of the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, including the expulsion of Jewish peoples from Spain, Indigenous peoples in the Americas, the development of science in the 15th century, and human enslavement. A National Endowment for the Humanities grant partially funded this project, and the Instituto Nazionale per il Commercia Estero [Italian Trade Commission] funded a lecture series titled "The Age of Discoveries and Italy's Economy."

Scope and Contents
Subseries IV.D Other Projects (dated 1986-1996) contains files related to the America in Theory book, the Walt Whitman exhibition at Museum of the City of New York, Henry James Sesquicentennial programming, and two conferences: one on minstrel shows and one celebrating 100 years of film. The America in Theory file includes essay drafts, correspondence with contributors and the publisher, promotional materials, and planning files for a book release party and other events. The Henry James Sesquicentennial file includes correspondence with other institutions planning similar events, a listing of Henry James seminars, and audio recordings of two lectures. The Whitman Centennary exhibition is documented with posters and correspondence between the Council and the Museum of the City of New York. This subseries includes program proposals, National Endowment for the Humanities grant proposals, and event planning files related to both conferences. The minstrel show conference file also includes budgets, invitations, and "pocket materials" created for conference attendees.
Historical Note
In the late 1980s and 1990s, the Humanities Council planned other projects tied to historical milestones or with other institutions. In 1986, Council Director Leslie Berlowitz began working on America in Theory, a volume of essays published by Oxford University Press in 1988. The essays explored how social programs enacted by the federal government were explained, justified, and promoted with a discourse on "American Ideals." This work was not explicitly tied to the U. S. Constitution Bicentennial in 1987, but its themes relate to other discussions, events, and programs the Council was engaged with at the time. In 1991 and 1992, the Council again collaborated with the Museum of the City of New York on an exhibition titled "Democracy's Poet: A Walt Whitman Celebration" tied to the poet's 100th birthday. Between 1991 and 1995, the Council planned lectures and seminars commemorating the 150th anniversary of Henry James's birth in conjunction with similar events planned by Louisiana State University and the Henry James Society. In 1995, the Council hosted a conference titled "The Appropriation of African-American Culture by the Minstrel Show." This conference was part of a larger group of events, "Exploring the Problem of the Color Line," overseen by the Atlanta Center for History. The same year, the Council hosted a conference commemorating 100 years of film, which was, in turn, one of many events planned by New York City institutions to celebrate the centenary.
