The earliest mention of New York University's track and field team is in the University Heights 1896 Violet yearbook. Since then, NYU has aided in the training of many track and field Olympians. The earliest track meets were held outside at Ohio Field on the University Heights campus, which was constructed in 1900. In 1912, the New York University Track Association held its first annual indoor meet at the 22nd Regiment Armory. In 1971 coach Joe Healey was named the United States Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
Today men's and women's track and field teams continue to compete at the varsity level in the University Athletic Association Conference.
