History of NYU Football
The NYU football team was founded in 1873 and was one of the first university-sponsored teams in the United States. NYU was integral to the regulation of college athletics in the early 20th century, helping to found the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, the precursor to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 1953 the team was disbanded. The football program made a short return in 1964 as a club sport, but eventually was discontinued in 1967.
