Historical Note
The American Chemical Society (ACS) was founded on April 6, 1976 at the College of Pharmacy in New York City. The first Journal of the American Chemical Society was published in April 1879. By 1930, ACS had over 18,000 members and on August 15, 1937, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Public Act No. 358, which incorporated the organization under federal charter. In 1976 ACS celebrated its centennial year at two national meetings and in 2001 celebrated their 125th anniversary by commissioning a tribute sculpture by the Italian artist, Lawrence Romorini.
