Biography

Charles F. Gosnell served as Director of Libraries at New York University (NYU) and professor at NYU's School of Law, specializing in civil liberties and constitutional law, from 1962 to 1974. During this time he served as a consultant to the University of Brasilia and to the Inter-American Development Bank and headed a UNESCO survey of public library services in Colombia.

Prior to these appointments, he was head of the New York State Library in Albany from 1945 to 1962. As State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner of Health and Education in New York, Dr. Gosnell received national attention in the early 1950s for his studies showing the deplorable state and neglect of the country's public libraries.

Upon his retirement from NYU in 1974, Gosnell was named adviser to the United States General Services Administration on archives and records centers.

Gosnell also served as the Grand Master of Masons in the State of New York.

Gosnell died in 1993 at his home in Utica, New York.
